Spatial Dynamics of Hantavirus: Prevalence
Field sampling has revealed salt desert and barren areas
(darker gray areas in figure below) greatly
reduce the prevalence of Sin Nombre Virus in deer mice. It is
hypothesized that this is due to the relative isolation of
sub-populations of deer mice in desert areas that leads to an
increased probability of local elimination of the virus prior to
transmission to other sub-populations. It can also be seen that
there is a large degree of variability over relatively short
distances in non-desert areas.
