Comments:
Takeoff at 1203 PST; Landing at 1426 PST for a 2.4 hour mission. Today was the first flight for AVIRIS-NG! Before flight, the hatch heater/blower was removed because of mechanical interference with AVIRIS-NG. The interference prevented the lower Q-Bay hatch from closing. A fix is being worked to re-locate the heater. After initial climb-out, during NAV init with Q7, 8, 9, and 10 on, there were no fail lights. While climbing through 51k - 55k feet, the Q8 fail started flashing slowly. During turns, Q8 was on solid. During 3-minute data runs, the Q8 fail light flashed slowly and randomly - no pattern could be discerned by the pilot. The Q8 fail light continued to flash when the ER-2 climbed to 67k feet then to 69k feet. The pilot then went through the Q8 and Q9 fail checklist. Initially, the Q8 fail light turned off but then would start randomly flashing again. There was turbulence at altitude with no clouds below with instant 10 deg F temperature changes. There was little turbulence when clouds were below. The AVIRIS scientists will evaluate the flight data to determine if AVIRIS-NG's first flight was a success. Dean Neeley was the pilot.
