Comments:
The ER-2 airplane flew the Southern CA Box with the AVIRIC-C and MASTER instruments. Ship 806 took off at 0908L and landed at 1642L for a 7.6 hour flight duration. Ship 806 took off a little late because of the R2 fail light again (MASTER SCSI drive not booting properly). The Q7 light was slowly flashing the entire flight. Coach said the Q7 also flashed during his flight yesterday. Marco believes this happens sometimes because of a power glitch in the transition going from ground to airplane power. Even with the flashing Q7 light, good AVIRIS data was obtained. There were no other instrument issues. Stu said he could see a stream of smoke from the Rincon fire that went south to La Jolla to Banning and out over the water near the Mexican border. But when flying overhead, he couldn't see the smoke. Stu completed one AVIRIS dewar topoff. Ship 806 had INS issues. Stu noted that at the end of a line the ER-2 drifted to the left. He used the "turn knob"(?) to keep the ER-2 straight. In Stu's opinion, the INS is going bad. There was no turbulence except at the southern part the lines near Mexico. Stu said that So Cal was beautiful - sky clear - he didn't fly over a single cloud. Today’s flight was very successful. Stu Broce was the pilot.
